Micro Manufacturing

Micro Manufacturing

Overview

The size and scale of medical devices are constantly being reduced to achieve more with less and Creganna is committed to helping our customers push the boundaries of what is possible.

Creganna is continually broadening it's suite of micro manufacturing capabilities in the sub .004" (100µm) scale. Our depth of micro manufacturing resources in cutting, moulding, machining and welding, among others; allow Creganna to develop not only micro manufactured components and sub-assemblies but complete end-to-end solutions, taking ideas from concept into commercial production.

Applications

Creganna's micro manufacturing capabilities are tailored to address the challenges faced in producing the latest delivery devices for minimally invasive surgery. This incorporates innovative catheter designs, complex features at the distal end of catheters or needles, as well as integrated device handles. In addition Creganna has the facility to produce implantable devices and discreet micro moulded components.

Typical applications of Creganna's micro manufacturing capabilities include:
  • Neurology - embolic coil delivery devices and surgical tools
  • Peripheral intervention - micro catheters to treat atherectomy and chronic total occlusion (CTO)
  • Opthalimics - micro needles and implantable devices
  • ENT - sinus catheters and surgical tools
  • Multi lumen devices for NOTES & laparoscopic surgery

Capabilities

Micro Laser Machining

Image 1: Short Pulse ablation of a match head (Scale Bar 100µm)
Creganna has adopted the latest generation of lasers from cutting-edge technological industries and integrated them specifically for medical device production. This technology facilitates not only speed and accuracy but finite machining skills at a micro level without causing any adverse heat affected zones.

A simple example of this is portayed in the image of the match head adjacent.

Creganna's laser technology is used for cutting, drilling, grinding and scribing to the tightest tolerences.

This capability provides Creganna with far reaching development potential at a micro level, not least, in the ability to micro machine a much wider range of materials beyond simple metals and alloys, but also polymers and bioabsorbable materials.

Laser processed polymers

Micro machining both flat and tube polymers at a micro level offers Creganna customers the ability to manipulate the functional characteristics of new polymer delivery devices in terms of push, track, torque and flexibility.

Micro Welding

The ability to micro weld components is an essential element of the Creganna's ability to fabricate components at a micro scale. For more information on this area click here

Micro Moulding

Creganna operates leading industry micro moulding equipment that can micro mould components for both discreet sub-assembly and complete device production.

Micro moulded components refer to items weighing less than 1 gram with features that can only be seen under magnification.  For more information click here

Micro Innovations

In support of our micro production capability, the Creganna Innovation Centre has developed micro scale innovations to address the increasing demands of the market.
